Guayacan

Guayacan

Tabebuia guayacan

It is a medium-sized tree, belonging to the Bignoniaceae family, that typically grows to a height of 15 meters (50 feet).

Although it thrives in areas with extreme drought conditions for most of the year, the tree maintains its green and lush foliage even under the most arid conditions. It typically grows to a diameter of around 60 cm.

Habitat

Guayacan is a common species found in tropical and dry forests ranging from Mexico and Guatemala to PanamáColombiaVenezuela, and Ecuador.

It thrives at elevations between 200 and 1,200 meters above sea level and grows primarily in warm regions.

Characteristics of wood

It is a beautiful wood of high density, known for its polished finishes and excellent qualities for carving and manufacturing.

This wood has gained fame for being harder than iron, a characteristic that has made it highly prized and nearly led to its extinction.

Once cut, the wood gradually turns a dark copper color over time. However, if sanded in detail, it regains its original green color.
